What are PCI Device Drivers?
Computers typically consist of the system itself as well as peripheral devices that are added to the system. Peripherals include devices such as printers, scanners, Blu-ray players, DVD burners, network adapters, and so on. If your device’s installation disk does not automatically install the PCI device drivers or you must download the drivers, you can use the built-in Device Manager to install the drivers.
Go to Control Panel and locate the Device Manager. Depending on your version of Windows and how you have the Control Panel set up, you should find it under System or Hardware and Sound. Double click its icon to launch it. Find the appropriate category for your device (such as network adapters if you’re installing an network adapter) and double click it to expand. If your new device does not appear in the list, right-click the category name and choose “Scan for hardware changes.” Your device should appear. Right-click the device and choose Update Driver Software. If you have a disc containing the software, choose “Browse my computer for driver software,” navigate to the disc, and follow the prompts. If you do not have a disc, use the “Search automatically” option and follow the prompts to install the driver.
Plug and Play PCI Device Drivers
Some devices are called “plug and play” devices. What this means is just as it sounds: the device will work with Windows immediately upon plugging it in. If you have a plug and play PCI device, you will not need to manually install device drivers because the necessary drivers have essentially been preinstalled into the operating system. When you plug in the device, Windows is programmed to immediately recognize the device.
Updating PCI Device Drivers
After installing the drivers, you may need to update them, especially if you are installing the drivers from an older CD that came with the device. If a newer driver is available, it’s smart to install it as it could solve known problems with the hardware. Use Device Manager once again. This time, when you right-click the device, choose Properties and click on the Driver tab. Click the Update button and choose the “Search automatically” option. Windows will look for fresh PCI device drivers and install them if they are found.

First, make sure your video card is securely plugged into your system. Hopefully, you have not uninstalled your video driver yet.
Download the new video card driver.
a. From the manufacturer’s website, click download drivers
b. Select which driver you need and click download
Uninstall the old Driver
a. Start -> Control Panel
b. Click Uninstall Program
c. Click the chipset you wish to remove
d. Click Remove
e. A pop up will ask you to confirm uninstall
f. You may be asked to restart your computer.
Install the new Driver
a. After the computer boots up, double click the video driver file you downloaded earlier
b. At this point, onscreen instructions will tell you how to finish installing the video drivers.
If you have already uninstalled the video driver, you may be able to follow the steps 1 and 3. However, it is not recommended. Additionally, your video card may not work properly while you are searching for the new driver.
If this is indeed the case, download the new driver to a USB drive. You will need to access the manufacturer’s website from another computer. Instead of downloading the driver to the desktop, download it to the USB drive. When you attempt to reinstall the driver, plug the USB drive into the computer. Then open up the USB drive and double click the new driver.

First Steps to Fixing the Dell Problems
If you want to fix your hardware issues, the first thing you should do is find the driver CD that came along with your Dell computer. This disc should be labeled like “Dell Drivers” or “Drivers and Utilities.” After inserting the disc into your CD drive, a wizard should appear and ask which drivers you want to install. After finding the appropriate drivers, download them to your computer. Most downloads from Dell are self-launching files, meaning all you have to do is click the icon and follow the installation prompts. If not, the device drivers will have to be manually installed from the Device Manager utility. From the Device Manager, locate the device in question and right-click on it. Choose the option that automatically browses your computer, select the downloaded device drivers, and follow the prompts for installing them.
If you take the route of downloading device drivers from Dell, be sure to remember where they are saved on the hard drive. By knowing where to look, you can save yourself tremendous if they ever need to be reinstalled again. An easier way to accomplish this would be saving the device drivers file in a special folder or on storage media.
